Hello everyone, and welcome to the very first entry of Mikey's Tackle Box!
Guess what? It's time to talk about one of my favorite things in the whole wide world: fishing! But not just any fishingāI'm talking about fishing in the amazing Laguna Madre and all the cool places nearby, like Corpus Christi and Port Aransas.
My family and I love to go fishing there, and I wanted to share my top 10 favorite spots with all of you. These are places where you can catch lots of fish and have a ton of fun with your family. So, grab your rod and reel, and let's go!
The Best Fishing Piers for a Fun Day Out!
Fishing piers are my favorite because you don't need a boat to catch big fish! They go way out into the water so you can reach where the fish are hiding.
1. Horace Caldwell Pier (Port Aransas)
This pier is super famous and for a good reason! It's really, really long, so you feel like you're walking right into the ocean. There's a bait shop on the pier, so you can get everything you need right there. We've caught everything from redfishĀ to sharksĀ hereāmy dad said the sharks are small, but they still feel like a monster on my line!
2. Bob Hall Pier (Corpus Christi)
Bob Hall Pier is a total legend! It's another super-long pier that goes into the Gulf of Mexico. This place is great for families because there are covered picnic tables, bathrooms, and even a place to get snacks. We've caught huge red snapperĀ and other cool fish here. It's a great place to fish and watch the waves all day.
3. Port Mansfield Fishing Pier
This one is a little more of a secret spot, but it's one of my favorites! The pier has lights, so sometimes we even go at night, which is a whole different kind of adventure. We've caught some giant speckled troutĀ here, and they are so much fun to reel in!
Awesome Places to Fish from the Shore!
You don't always need a pier to catch a fish. Sometimes the best spots are right on the beach or a park!
4. Isla Blanca Park Jetties (South Padre Island)
The jetties are like big rock walls that go out into the water. It's a great spot because you don't need a boat. You can just walk right out and cast your line. We've caught super cool fish here like redfishĀ and sheepshead. They're strong fighters, so be ready to reel!
5. Roberts Point Park Pier (Port Aransas)
This spot is awesome because it's right next to the ferry landing. We get to watch the big boats go by while we fish! The pier is next to a playground, so when I get tired of fishing (which is almost never!), I can go play. This is a great place to catch speckled troutĀ and redfish.
6. Goose Island State Park (Rockport)
Goose Island is a super neat place to fish. You can fish right from the shore or even wade into the water. My dad says the grass flats here are a good place to find redfishĀ hiding. It's also a great place to see the famous "Big Tree" and all sorts of birds.
7. Cole Park Pier (Corpus Christi)
This is a free fishing spot and it's right in the middle of Corpus Christi. It has beautiful views of the bay and is a great spot for the whole family to hang out. We've caught redfishĀ and black drumĀ here, which are really cool fish that make a drumming sound.
8. Adolph Thomae Jr. County Park
This is a fun place to fish because you get to see lots of cool stuff. It's on the west side of the Laguna Madre, and it's nice and calm. My mom says it's a perfect spot for beginners because the water is shallow and the fish are always biting!
9. Bird Island Basin (Padre Island National Seashore)
If you like birds as much as I do, you'll love this spot! It's a little bit of a drive, but totally worth it. The water here is super clear, so sometimes you can even see the fish swimming! We like to wade in the water here, and we always catch lots of redfish.
10. Rockport Beach Park
This is Texas' first "Blue Wave Beach," which means it's super clean and a great place for families. You can fish right from the shore, build a sandcastle, and then fish some more. We've caught some nice troutĀ and flounderĀ here.
I hope you get to try one of these spots soon. Fishing is the best, especially when you can share it with your family!
Happy fishing, Mikey
